She also brought clothing and souvenir items available for sale. Danny thanked Sue for all her hard work and all applauded. OLD BUSINESS: 2010 Calving report: Danny Meyer reported that more members need to do, and continue to do is collect data. Data collected shows that we are maintaining smaller birth weights, but we need to zero in on the 205 weaning dates. Keep track of horns, scurs, and polled. Danny commented on the disposition of the BueLingo cattle, and he seems to think we are going "all directions" on this. Disposition comes from the female side, and we need to keep an eye on this. He also thinks we need to keep track of yearling weights, especially if we decide to do EPD's. He also mentioned that we need (the National) to set up some sort of a protocol for the society if someone has any genetic problems. If someone is having a genetic problem, it should be documented. WI Farm Tech Days: Sue Blair reported they had excellent exposure. Bob Meyer and "the Babe" were guest speakers. Sue thanked Kim Friberg and family for bringing their 2 heifers for the display. She also thanked the Monsons, Gene Kissner, and others who helped in the booth. Sue reported that the last day was rained out, and it was a muddy mess. 2010 National Convention. Sue Blair reported that the convention was held on June 24-27th, 2010 in Leavenworth, Kansas, and was hosted by Joe and Judy Steve. 40 people were in attendance, and 20 cattle were in the show. MN Beef Expo: Gene Kissner reported that there was not a booth because of lack of volunteers. Other Old Business: None NEW BUSINESS: Guest Speaker, Dr. Gary Onan: Dr. Onan gave a presentation first reviewing the 2009 feedlot versus grass fed cattle studies conducted by UW River Falls. The test consisted of 20 head of BueLingo Cattle and 16 head of other breeds of cattle (half of each being grass fed, and half being feedlot fed), with comparisons of each once finished and slaughtered. Dean and LuAnn Monson winter fed the BueLingos, while UW River Falls winter fed the other breeds with same rations. Dr. Onan reported that the feedlot feed cattle went to market sooner. Grass fed cattle took longer to finish, and weather did not allow them to finish completely on grass. The last month or so, the cattle were finished in the feedlot. Dr. Onan reported that no implants were used. Dr. Onan spoke on the grade and yields, sensory analysis (tenderness, juiciness, and flavor), and shear force (how much force to cut meat-measures tenderness). His results found that the BueLingo Breed "is right up there" with the Angus/Other Breeds. Break for lunch: EPD'S (Expected Progency Difference): Dr Onan reported on those factors used to get EPD's. Birth weight, Weaning weight, Maternal Milk, and Yearling weights are needed. Pedigrees, and raw data are used to get certain traits of ALL calves. Once all factors are in, then you choose what works best to fit your environment. Dr. Onan suggested Mark Enns, Colorado State University Center for a Genetic Evaluation. He can be reached at markenns@colostate. edu, or 1-970-491-2722. He thought the going rate was $500 for an evaluation, and then $1500 or more if suitable for services depending on the number of cattle involved (per year). Dr. Onan stressed, "good data in, good data out". Midwest BueLingo Cattle 6th Annual Breeders Sale. Date is set for March 12, 2011 at the Equity Sales Barn in Sparta, WI. Our contract with the sales barn would be the same as in 2010, that being 5% commission to Equity, and 4% commission to the Midwest. Danny stresses that we all bring good, quality animals. A reminder that you have to be a paid National and Midwest member to sell BueLingos at this sale. He would like as many to sign up after the meeting today as possible. Please give Danny a call at 1-715-613-0889 for questions, or more information. MN TB Status: Basic TB test now, then can move cattle in and out of MN. To move cattle from MN to WI is TB only also. Not sure what SD status is. WI Farm Tech Days: Date is set for July 12-14th, 2011 in Marshfield, WI. Mark Weaver has offered to help Danny. Motion made to have a display by Gene Kissner, and seconded by Stan Olson. All in favor. Danny wondering about having the organization be involved in a "special beef night". This is promoting beef in general. Danny will meet with the north central board of directors to see if they would want to split the cost. It would be a catered meal, half of the cost would be approximately $500. Dean Monson made the motion to give Danny authorization to follow through, being able to use $500. Seconded by Mark Weaver. All in favor. Danny handed out information on the winter conference of the WI Cattleman's Association & WI Cattlewomen's Association held on February 11-12th, 2011, at the Wintergreen Resort in Wisconsin Dells, WI. MN Beef Expo: Members are to let know if they are interested in doing in 2011. Monies are available. Fall Field Day: Let Danny know if anyone is interested in doing something. Honorable mention performance steers: Y-24 Bauer, Y-36 Monson, Y-56 Smith, and Y-59 Smith. Scott Brener thought we need to compensate Dr. Onan for his mileage.
